Distance

When I held you near my heart only seeing the rising and falling of your chest I felt a rush of calm
Legs and thighs intertwined only seeing my deep ebony shade as a backdrop to your caramely dewy skin
Scared to shift sides and lose our heart to heart connection
Watch your eyelids flicker debating rising to start the day or remaining in a slumber
You chose to rise up and walk
away from our closeness and care
Away from me who worked to keep you warm and soft
Distance etches out  hundreds of kilometers of silence between us
Awkward silence on the phone when two hearts are constipated  with fear and longing
Pride halts any voices from speaking
Hearts break silently
Tears fall sweetly
Chests rise and fall
A cacophony of fear rings out through both voices
As one mustered up the courage to say those three words
I forgive you
