Honest

You set up a boundary meant to keep others out
You dig deep, fortify it’s walls and electricity runs through the wires
One day a curious explorer attempts to take the fortified heart
He amuses you and with each story, laugh, and smile the electric fence goes dead
The concrete becomes soft and so do you
The innumerable discussions about dreams, wants, and desires are had and honesty flows one sided from you to him
Family or career?
Africa or US?
Christian or Muslim?
All questions are asked and one side answers honestly
Lopsided truths veiled in the hope to keep the positive electric energy flowing reciprocally
Holy month comes and all at once the surge of honesty flows from him to you
Backed up months of truths come flying at your softness miles per minute
Too late to resurrect the wire fence
You are raw, open, unprotected
Tears flow freely as the previously conceived niceties erode into cold discontentedness
Eyes swollen from consuming the hard truths
Body aches from hovering oneself from the attacks
At the end of the battle you walk up and rebuild the wall, turn on the electric fence
And as the surge runs through the wires you heart resumes its beating.
